Abstract

The former United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG), Boutros-Ghali, deserves to be remembered as an advocate for applying democratic principles to the international order in his 1992 Agenda for Peace. Above all, democratizing international relations means ensuring the nonselective application of international law and enhancing multilateralism. The 2023 Summit of the Future, proposed by current UNSG António Guterres, represents an opportunity to consolidate what works, reform what has proved inoperable, and extend multilateralism to new areas. The multipolarity of the contemporary world can help to avoid the erosion of the multilateral system and improve it.
