Abstract

Calls to reassert U.S. control over the Panama Canal may stir political nostalgia, but they ignore a modern reality: Panama has become a model of neutral, strategic governance. In a world rocked by chokepoint crises and shifting alliances, the Canal's stability is a global asset. Undermining Panama's sovereignty risks fueling anti-U.S. sentiment and regional instability. The smarter path forward? Strengthen cooperation – not control – and invest in one of the few global success stories we all depend on.
