Abstract

While the liberal rules-based world order and globalization have been in crisis for almost two decades, Donald Trump’s disruptive approach to international trade, preference for deals, and disregard for common values threatens to facilitate the fragmentation of the world into rival blocs or competing spheres of influence. While a new bipolarity as well as unbound great power rivalry would threaten multilateral cooperation and international peace on a global scale, a flexible multipolarity driven by soft power might offer a hopeful alternative.
