Abstract

This article demonstrates that the United Provinces of Rio de la Plata was the first sovereign State to recognize Brazilian independence on November 9, 1822, contradicting the virtual consensus in Foreign Affairs that the United States of America would have been the first country to do so. Challenging the realistic assumptions of the dominant historiography, it contributes to constructing a more complete and nuanced image of the bilateral relations between Brazil and Argentina.
