Abstract

This article discusses the democratization process in Mozambique, considering its advances and setbacks and, in particular, the permanence of the dominant party (Frelimo) in power, notwithstanding the regular occurrence of multiparty elections. Starting with the debate on democracy in Africa, it then rescues the historical process of state formation in Mozambique, considering the elements that help explain the country’s current democratic state: the legacies of the liberation struggle and the 16-year war, the dynamics related to the gatekeeper state and the patterns of clientelism and patronage.
