Abstract

The search for international status is a historical feature of Brazilian foreign policy. Among the strategies to project the country abroad, environmental policy is an important tool. It helped to propel Brazil as a relevant player in the world between the 1990s and 2010s. However, the destruction of the Amazon became a symbol of Brazilian isolation under Bolsonaro. Based on theories of status in IR, this article analyzes interviews with the foreign policy community of the P5 and reveals the external perception that environmental leadership can help Brazil to achieve an important role in world politics.
