Author Guidelines

CEBRI-Journal is published by the Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI), responsible for its publication, editorial policy, priorities, and management, following the best open science practices in communication.

The journal covers a wide range of topics related to Brazilian Foreign Policy and International Relations, presenting the analysis of experienced observers and scholars on the international agenda's preeminent issues.

Contributions from academics, policymakers, and analysts with original articles and essays are encouraged. Submissions should be conceptually sound, empirically based, and policy-oriented.

Written in Portuguese, Spanish, or English, all texts are freely accessible to the public.

CEBRI-Journal does not charge submission, evaluation, or publication fees.

Types of Publication

CEBRI-Journal publishes policy papers, academic articles, snapshots, book reviews, and interviews.

Policy Papers

Policy papers follow the traditional essayistic model and should discuss contemporary themes of International Relations or Brazilian Foreign Policy and their political implications.

The maximum length for policy papers is 6,000 words. CEBRI-Journal encourages authors to cite pertinent literature on the subject matter.

Submissions must contain the title, abstract, and keywords in English and the text's language, if different from English.

The policy paper review process takes 4 to 6 weeks. 

Academic Articles

CEBRI-Journal publishes original articles with pertinent contributions to current academic debates relevant to International Relations professionals. These articles are based on scientific literature and evidence, similar to traditional academic articles, presenting scholarly debates qualified by pertinent literature but with an eye to concrete international politics. The article should present the central debates and scientific findings of International Relations and translate them into a policy debate.

The maximum length for evidence-based articles is 7,000 words, including bibliographic references. They must also strictly observe the citation formatting and other guidelines per the Rules for submission and References guidelines sections. 

Submissions must contain the title, abstract, and keywords in English and the text's language, if different from English. 

Academic articles undergo a double-blind peer review process that takes 6 to 8 weeks.

Submissions for policy papers and academic articles can be written at the invitation of the editorial team or submitted for editorial review via CEBRI-Journal's submission system. 

The editorial team reviews submissions to ensure they meet editorial policy requirements. Manuscripts may be rejected without a peer review at this stage if they are outside the journal's thematic scope, do not meet all submission requirements, or if plagiarism is detected. 

After review, the editors decide whether the submission should be published as is, with modifications, or rejected. 

Book Reviews

The International Relations book reviews section covers studies published in the last five years across the field, from theoretical to policy-oriented and from regional to global. Book reviews are published upon invitation by the editorial team to academics or professionals. They may involve more than one book per reviewer and focus on general topics of interest to CEBRI-Journal.

The book review should inform the reader about the book's content, quality, and position in the general context of its field. Criticism is welcome as long as it is well-founded. 

Book reviews should have a maximum of one thousand words per book reviewed. Book reviews prescind abstracts and keywords, but should have a title.

 Interviews

Interviews are done upon invitation by the editorial team to critical persons in international politics, such as professional politicians, diplomats, academics, activists, and people of relevance in business to global and Brazilian International Relations. Interviews should be approximately two thousand words long.

Snapshots

Snapshots are short texts addressing themes of international relevance. Commissioned by the editors, they have the format of a policy paper but focus on a current theme. They should have a maximum of 2000 words and may or may not cite relevant literature, although their use is encouraged by the editorial team.

Rules for submission

• All submissions to CEBRI-Journal must be original and unpublished and may not be under consideration for publication by other journals.
• There are certain circumstances where the editors will consider previously published material for publication. Please contact the editorial team for specific cases. 
• Academic articles and policy papers submitted to CEBRI-Journal must contain Title, Abstract, and Keywords in English, and the text's original language, if different from English.
• The title should be ten words maximum. The average suggested length is 5-7 words.
• The abstract should be 75 words maximum, with a total of 150 words including the Abstract in Porguese.
• Titles should begin with the capitalized first word and all other words in lowercase, except names and institutions. A colon separates the title and subtitle, with the first word after the column also in lowercase. There is no need for a period/full stop at the end of the title.
• Keywords should be separated by a semicolon and a period/full stop after the last keyword. The article should have between three and five keywords. Only given names should begin with capital letters.
• Author credits should include a short bio with 50 words (or 350 characters, including spaces) in English, and the text's original language, if different from English. 
• Authors must also inform their ORCID number. Registration is available at: <https://orcid.org/register>.
• Minibio and link for ORCID number must be submitted in a separate text file.
• Text files must be submitted in Calibri or Times New Roman font, size 12, 1.15 spacing.
• The text should start directly, with no section heading like "Introduction" or "Presentation."
• Direct quotations of up to three lines come in the text in double quotes ("example"). Citations of more than three lines come in a separate paragraph, with a left margin of 4 cm, without quotation marks, and italic font.
• Subsections of the text are not numbered, and their titles must be in bold font and capital letters, aligned to the left with a standard margin. Titles of sections inside subsections must be in regular, bold font. There is no full stop in subheadings.
• The text may contain footnotes, numbered sequentially in Arabic numerals. They should be succinct and used for complementary comments and interjections in the text. Full bibliographic references should not be indicated in footnotes.
• Citations and bibliographical references should follow the Chicago Style Author-Date model. Click <here> for more details.
• Book Reviews must include at least the book reviewed as a bibliographic reference. Book Reviews must also have a title.
• Files for submission must be in Microsoft Word, Open Document, RTF, or a similar format, with anonymous metadata. 
• Graphs and tables must be sent separately, in high resolution. These images must also be inserted in the text file with numbered captions (example: Graph 1, Graph 2, Figure 1, Figure 2, Table 1, Table 2, etc.), indicating their description and source.

References Guidelines

CEBRI-Journal uses the Chicago Style Author-Date system for citations and bibliographic references.

Evaluation Process

CEBRI-Journal continuously accepts the manuscripts submission of all publication types defined by editorial policy: policy papers, evidence-based academic articles, snapshots, book reviews, and interviews.
Submission and evaluation of manuscripts are carried out exclusively through the online submission system OJS. E-mail submissions will not be accepted.

Evidence-based articles are submitted to a double-blind peer review, as detailed below. The other publications receive an editorial review, which assesses their thematic pertinence, adequacy to the editorial policy, quality, and originality.

The average response time is 6 to 8 weeks for academic articles, 4 to 6 weeks for other types of submissions, and about one week for snapshots.

Submissions accepted for publication are sent to author review for adequacy to editorial demands and, in the case of academic articles, for adjustments based on the evaluation reports.

At the discretion of CEBRI-Journal editors, the final version of an academic article might undergo a second round of peer revision and author corrections.

If the manuscripts' final version does not satisfactorily meet the editorial or evaluation demands, CEBRI-Journal may decide not to publish them.

Evaluation Process for Academic Articles

Academic articles commissioned by or submitted to CEBRI-Journal undergo two evaluation stages. The first verify manuscript adequacy to the journal's thematic scope and requirements for peer review. In the second, reviewers chosen by the associate editors, supported by the Editorial Board, evaluate selected manuscripts. The editors decide whether to approve or reject the submission based on evaluation recommendations. These procedures also apply to articles for the Special Section. Policies

Plagiarism Policy

CEBRI-Journal has a rigid anti-plagiarism policy. We have two mechanisms to help detect texts not adequately cited or situations characterized as plagiarism (including self-plagiarism): plagiarism identification software and the peer-review process. The Journal reserves the right to reject manuscripts in which plagiarized content is identified to any extent.

When a published submission is found to have plagiarized another work or to have included third-party copyrighted material without permission or with insufficient acknowledgment, or when the authorship of the article is disputed, we reserve the right to take action, including but not limited to: publishing an erratum (correction); publishing a retraction of the article; taking the matter up with the institution to which the author is affiliated and/or relevant academic bodies or societies; and taking appropriate legal action.

Gender equality and diversity policy

CEBRI-Journal is committed to improving gender balance and diversity in International Relations. The publication seeks to maintain the gender balance of authors invited to any issue or special section and ensure institutional and geographical plurality. In addition, it encourages authors submitting materials to consider gender balance in their references.

CEBRI-Journal publishes policy papers and academic articles. It also publishes snapshots, book reviews, and interviews.
