Abstract

This work represents preliminary interpretations of the effects of the war in Ukraine on the interstate system and Brazil, considering classical Anglo-Saxon and Brazilian geopolitical theory. The main argument is that the primary cause for the war’s outbreak is the geographic sensitivity inherent to great powers regarding their territorial integrity and their surrounding security conditions, as observed with Russia. As the war in Ukraine is an ongoing event, we assess the most significant aspects already visible and relate them to the structural changes that have taken place in the past fifteen years. Finally, this work presents reflections regarding the challenge of reviewing the Brazilian “grand strategy” in light of the new geopolitical scenario.
