Abstract

The International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, established eighty years ago, are still functioning in the heart of the international financial system. However, they face severe challenges in the changing world. In particular, they need to tackle the issues of insufficient financial resources in low-income countries, limited liquidity access for developing economies and emerging markets, and slow pace of governance reform that has resulted in a considerable mismatch between economic importance and decision-making power.
