The Benefits of an Addiction: Alberto da Costa e Silva and Africa

Abstract

This paper presents the Africanist face of Alberto da Costa e Silva, poet, historian, essayist, diplomat, member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, and winner, among others, of the Camões Prize in 2014. Following an early passion that only grew throughout life, he built a solid knowledge about the historical production concerning the African continent, enriched by the experience of the four years he was the ambassador of Brazil in Nigeria and Benin. His work is fundamental for developing the studies and teaching of African history in Brazil.
